Did you know that every visit to our regional landfill helps support local college students?
As part of Douglas County’s agreement to host the landfill in our community, the county receives a small portion of the fees collected. These funds help support county services, including road maintenance, land use, and Solid Waste collection events like the annual Free Disposal Day.
A small part of these funds also goes into a scholarship fund, which has helped 16 Douglas County students pursuing college degrees in environmental engineering or environmental studies since it was established in 2005.
Recently, Douglas County Solid Waste received a letter from one of the scholarship recipients:

I wanted to write this letter to express my gratitude to you all for selecting me to receive your environmental studies scholarship. I am extremely appreciative for your scholarship, as it will help me achieve my goal of being an environmental scientist. I have always been interested in the field as I love the outdoors and want to do my part in helping the environment through the climate crisis. I live in a single income family that is fairly large in size, so college is notably expensive for our budget. This scholarship means more than you could ever imagine, and it will help me take one step closer to getting through college. Thank you all so much!
We’re proud that the Host Agreement between Douglas County and WM continues to positively impact the lives of Douglas County residents – nearly 20 years after its inception.
