Douglas County has officially opened its new Moderate Risk Waste Facility, expanding safe and convenient disposal options for residents and marking an important milestone in community service and partnership.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on March 19 to celebrate this important milestone, followed by the facility’s grand opening on Friday, March 20, 2026.

During the event, Douglas County Commissioner Marc Straub reflected on the significance of the facility’s opening, calling it “a moment that we have been looking forward to for a long time.” He emphasized that the project is a strong example of what can be accomplished through partnership and collaboration.

“This facility is a demonstration of the strength of partnerships,” Straub said, recognizing the support and cooperation of WM, the Washington State Department of Ecology, community partners, and all who helped make the project possible.

The new facility provides Douglas County residents with an ongoing opportunity to properly dispose of moderate risk household waste in a safe and responsible manner. The MRWF will help ensure these materials are collected and handled appropriately, providing an important new service for the community.

Commissioner Straub also highlighted the leadership of Douglas County Solid Waste Director Becci Piepel, noting that the project would not have been possible without her dedication and direction.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners and Director Piepel also shared appreciation for Chelan County, whose team at their Moderate Risk Waste Facility generously provided guidance, shared expertise, and helped train Douglas County staff as the new facility prepared to open.

In addition, Becci thanked Douglas County Administrator Jordyn Giulio and the Board of Commissioners for their continued guidance and support throughout the project, and the Douglas County facilities maintenance team, who helped bring the facility to life.  Special thanks also went to her team in the Douglas County Solid Waste Department for their hard work and commitment throughout the project.

The opening of the Moderate Risk Waste Facility marks a significant step forward in expanding safe, convenient waste disposal options for Douglas County residents and reflects the value of strong regional partnerships in serving the community.  Learn more about the facility, including hours of operation and accepted items here.
